Envisioning the Connected Home in the future
- Boston (US) / MIT, March - September 2008
The Connected Home of the future will incorporate an integrated approach to buildings and their interaction with occupants, the local community, and beyond. The scenario incorporates smart energy solutions, automated services and efficiency measures to aid citizens lead more sustainable lives within their communities. Technologies such as a Personal Travel Assistant, energy monitoring tools, Telepresence and social networking interactions, and energy grids for micro generation of energy across the urban community illustrate how citizens can play a positive and sustainable role in their urban landscape.
Brief / Concept
The MIT Mobile Experience Laboratory partnered with Cisco - Connected Urban Development project - to envision how homes will interact with their occupants and with other homes to support community and sustainability dynamics. The Connected Home scenario globally focuses on urban, suburban and rural context to propose integrated and sustainable solutions meant to increase citizens' awareness on energy consumption through ICTs.
Design Process
Imagining scenarios related to the future connected home and communities implies to forecast the next innovations in ICTs and to analyze the emerging trends in the social & economical sphere. In the design process, we defined the connected home as part of a wide ecosystem which role corresponds to an interconnected node in a highly-complex network. In particular, we addressed this heterogenous context focusing on the final users rather than the mere technologies. Domestic contexts, architecture elements, transportation means and energy management solutions were taken into consideration with a user-centered approach. This pattern was then repeated across urban, suburban and rural communities; the collection of concepts were then clustered and translated into scripts and storyboards that were finally used to create the scenario video as a part of the Connected Urban Development future visions.
