Danube is a 2800 km long communication media. Its original meaning is to flow, run. Transdanube is an experimental project regarding the river, his environment and the usage of networked objects that are able to communicate along the Internet. It consists in a small size ship-alike container that flows along Danube, without any control, in a unpredictable way, simply following the water currents and forces. Transdanube creates a continuous and random narration regarding the places that is visiting. In fact, a website displays in real-time informations and environmental data about the place Transdanube is located. Further contents are generated thanks to a number of API available on web services: the coordinates are used to retrieve Wikipedia entries related to the surroundings, local informations, weather forecast, georeferenced pictures, maps and more. Finally, the environmental data are used to create a feed (environmentXML standard) that is accessible to external services for further mashups.
Design Process
TransDanube project was conceived and developed during the Summer 2007 Research Residency at KitchenBudapest. A working prototype was completed and tested in Budapest.
